Literature Questions
What can we learn from literature?
  • "...We learn what it means to be human." -Cliffnotes.com
  • Literature, or works of writing, teaches us how many possibilities are out there, what people did in the past, and what our minds can conjour up.
  • We learn the types of mistakes that people made in history so we, in the present, can learn not to make the same mistakes again.
How do I effectively convey my opinion or assertion about text?
  • You have to first state your opinion, and then support that statement with ideas or phrases from the text.
  • Or, if citing from the text is unnecessary, you do not have to. Instead, state your opinion and support it with facts. Be sure not to support it with something like, "Just because." It has to be persuasive and professional.
What is perseverance?
  • Perseverance, according to the online dictionary definition, states that perseverance is the mental determination to do something despite delay in achieving that goal, or hardships.
  • Perseverance is that drive that makes us finish something difficult and tiresome. Such examples may include homework, state tests, being nice to siblings, or even resisting the urge to check the time every five seconds. Perseverance allows us to achieve our goals because we are determined to finish them. Homework may be hard and tiresome, but the feeling of getting done makes us push through and complete it. You may not even want to do a state test, but you feel better once you're done so you work through it. Being nice to siblings may not always be easy, but when you think about the outcome, it feels great to know they love you back. I would do the last example, but I'm pretty sure you get the idea. Perseverance allows you to keep the end in mind, and allow you to achieve more than you thought possible. Remember, the word 'impossible' broken up in two says 'I'm possible.' ^-^
How do characters reveal their qualities?
  • Characters may reveal their qualities in many ways. One way is that the actions they do may reveal how rude, nice, playful, or anything else that makes them who they are. They may choose to do this by bullying other people, laughing all the time, or even giving everyone a gift when unnecessary.
  • Another way characters reveal themselves may be through what they don't do. For example, if a character is shy, writers may make them stay in the back of the crowd, not talking to people. Or, if the character doesnt like to build stuff, they may stay away from places such as Home Depot, or Lowe's.

"Leaves on Leaves on Leaves"
My movie's opening scene is of a tree with leaves. Many leaves. Leaves on leaves on leaves, hence the title. I don't exactly know what it's going to be about, but sometime during the movie, an ant will crawl across someone's forehead because when I was laying on my back, looking up, drawing the tree, I felt an ant crawl across my forehead. I quickly sat up and shook my head violently to shake it off. It was gone after that. I think for now, I will make my movie about five to ten minutes long, but I may make it longer later on if necessary.

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli chapter notes
Ch. 1: The story is introduced, (besides the prologue, of course) and the beginning of the story mostly takes place in Mica Area High School's cafeteria. The main characters Kevin Quinlant and Leo Borlock get an idea for which person they could use to next on their show called "Hot Seat" when a new student, who goes by the name "Stargirl" arrives.
Ch. 2: Another main character, Hillari Kimble, is also introduced. Her personality is revealed to think that Stargirl is not real because she's just plain different. She doesn't fit in with the other kids in school.
Ch. 3: Leo is now hesitant whether they should ask Stargirl if she wants to be on "Hot Seat," thus causing an argument between him and Kevin. Leo spots and follows Stargirl to the desert, where he finds that she carries around a pet rat. He then runs back home before Stargirl reaches her destination.

Leonardo da Vinci notes
Leonardo da Vinci is a well-educated Italian scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor, architect, botanist (someone who studies plant biology), musician, and writer, according to leonardodavinci.org. Two of da Vinci's most famous work includes the Mona Lisa, and The Last Supper. However, did you know that only about 15 of da Vinci's paintings survived? It is because he experiments with many dangerous things when he invents, and because of his constant procrastination. Some of da Vinci's inventions includes a tank, a helicopter, solar power, and a calculator. Only a few of these ideas were actually created and brought into the manufacturing world, though. Being a scientist, he greatly improved our knowledge on anatomy, civil engineering, optics, and hydrodynamics.

Stargirl chapter 18 notes
  • Leo and Stargirl are being ignored in school
  • During lunch, Leo confronts Kevin to ask him why no one pays attention to him and Stargirl anymore
  • Everyone blames Stargirl for their school's team losing, Hillari likes the silent treatment going on for the couple, and Stargirl doesn't notice the isolation

Stargirl final exam notes
  • Stargirl brought a rat to school. (pg. 7, paragraph 6)
  • Stargirl and Leo followed people around the mall for 15 minutes because they tried to learn about them to figure out what kind of card they would need. (pg. 74, paragraph 6)
  • Kevin and Leo's TV show is called "Hot Seat." (pg. 3, paragraph 13)
  • Stargirl's enchanted place is in the desert. (pg. 54, paragraph 2)
  • Archie and Leo buried Barney's skull in the desert. (pg. 118, paragraph 9)
  • Stargirl's real name is Susan. (pg. 38, paragraph 1)
  • Stargirl pretended her bottom was on fire during the taping of "Hot Seat." (pg. 36, paragraph 9)
  • After Stargirl wins the state oratorical contest, she thinks she would become popular. (pg. 95, paragraph 6)
  • At the Ocotillo ball, Stargirl led the bunny hop dance. (pg. 111, paragraph 5)
  • At the Glendale basketball game, someone threw a tomato at Stargirl's face. (pg. 44, paragraph 7)
  •  "Her hair is as shiny as ebony" is not a metaphor.
  • A figure of speech is known as an idiom.
  • In my opinion, Stargirl's enduring legacy to MAHS is to never be afraid to be yourself. This is because Stargirl does whatever she wants, whenever she wants. An example would be during one of MAHS's football team. Jerry Spinelli writes that "She plucked it off the tee and danced with it, spinning and hugging it and hoisting it into the air." No one not being their self would do such things, so I think Stargirl teaches people to be who they are and not care about what everyone else thinks.
  • When everything is being introduced to the reader (setting, characters, plot), it is called the exposition.
  • When the round characters are developed, the conflict is increased/acted out in many ways, and the motives are introduced, it is called the rising action.
  • When the "high point" in which the conflict erupts in a final showdown, and there is a clear "winner," it is called the climax.
  • When events following the climax "clean up" the story, it is called the falling action.
  • When everything ends, and the reader may have a sense of "closure," it is called the resolution.

Stargirl essay
The book Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli has three main characters each with their own individual personalities and characteristics. They are Leo Borlock, Susan (Stargirl) Caraway, and Kevin Quinlant. You may be wondering why Caraway has two first names, but that will be discussed later on.
First to be introduced, and the one narrating this story is Leo Borlock. He tells everything in a first person perspective, and the book is basically his journal. Kevin Quinlant is his best friend, and they do everything together. One thing they do is film a television show they call "Hot Seat." Being the logical, sensible one, Borlock is behind the scenes managing the cameras and lights. Quinlant, well, he will be introduced further down the article. The more you read Stargirl, you will discover how Leo becomes Susan Caraway's friend, and eventually boyfriend. The two of them go on journeys and do a lot of activities together such as following people around the mall for fifteen minutes, walk into the desert, and celebrate Caraway's victory when she wins the oratorical contest. Leo is a very supportive, logical person. He keeps to himself, talks to his circle of friends, and becomes curious when Stargirl stands out in his school: Mica Area High.
Subsequently, we have Susan (Stargirl) Caraway. She is the second main character in this story, and the most abnormal. When she first arrives to MAHS, she has a ukulele strapped to her back, and a canvas bag on her shoulder with a sunflower picture on it. She also has a pet rat named Cinnamon, and it rides along inside the bag wherever Stargirl goes. Her face is sprinkled with freckles, and her hair is sand-colored. Stargirl Caraway does whatever she wants, whenever she wants, meaning she's not afraid to be herself. She changes her name multiple times when it doesn't "fit her anymore."
